A Paprika alternative for iPhone, iPad and Mac
Paprika is a long-standing, well-regarded recipe manager. If you only use Apple devices and want one app that works the same way on iPhone, iPad and Mac, with sync through your own iCloud and no separate account, here’s how Plate & Page compares.
Free to start · five recipes and three reviewed imports free · Premium is a one-time US$9.99, with Family Sharing
Everything said about Paprika on this page comes from Paprika’s own website, quoted and dated below. Paprika’s site describes it this way: “Paprika is an app that helps you organize your recipes, make meal plans, and create grocery lists.” Plate & Page does those same jobs, so the useful question is which one fits the way you cook.

| Sync | “Paprika Cloud Sync allows you to seamlessly sync your recipes, grocery lists, and meal plans across all of your devices.” The site refers to “your free cloud sync account”. | Your own iCloud, with no Plate & Page account |
| Saving from the web | “Using Paprika’s built-in browser, you can save recipes from anywhere on the web.” | Share a page to Plate & Page or paste its link; every import opens as a draft for review |
| Grocery list | “Ingredients in your grocery list are automatically sorted by aisle” and “Similar ingredients will also be combined” | One combined list grouped by aisle, built from your plan or a recipe (Premium); manual list free |
| Meal planning | “Create meal plans for the week, or for the month.” | A week with breakfast, lunch, dinner and other slots (Premium) |
Paprika’s site also lists automatic timer detection, ingredient scaling, metric and imperial conversion, and keeping the screen on while a recipe is open. Plate & Page does each of those too. Paprika’s site currently announces “Paprika 4 Is Now In Open Beta!”, so some of its details may change.
Where Plate & Page is different
- Reviewed imports. Nothing joins your cookbook until you’ve checked it. Every import, from a web link, pasted text or photos, opens as an editable draft, and in the free edition an import slot is used only when you save.
- Photos of printed recipes. Pick up to eight photos from your photo library, such as a recipe that runs over two cookbook pages. The text is recognized on your device and the photos become one recipe.
- Cooking Mode. One step at a time in large type, optional on-device voice commands on iPhone and iPad (“next”, “back”, “repeat”), and it resumes where you left off after an interruption. See how hands-free Cooking Mode works.
- Household sharing. Share recipes, plans and groceries with the people you live with through Apple’s iCloud invitations. Creating a household is part of Premium; the people you invite don’t need to buy it.
- Native on iPad and Mac. A three-column layout and keyboard shortcuts on Mac. There’s more on the recipe app for Mac page.
- No account, no ads, no tracking. The App Store privacy label reads “Data Not Collected”.
Plate & Page’s planner turns a week of meals into one grocery list. The guide shows how to plan a week and build your grocery list.
When Paprika is the better pick
- You need Android or Windows. Paprika’s site lists downloads for both. Plate & Page is for iPhone, iPad and Mac only.
- You plan a month at a time. Paprika’s site says you can “Create meal plans for the week, or for the month.” Plate & Page plans by the week.
- You like saving recipes inside the app’s own browser. That’s how Paprika’s site describes its web saving. Plate & Page works from Safari’s share sheet or a pasted link instead.
- You already have a large Paprika library and you’re happy with it. There’s no automatic way to bring it into Plate & Page, as the next section explains.
Moving recipes over
To be clear about it: Plate & Page has no dedicated Paprika importer and no bulk import. Switching means re-adding the recipes you want, one at a time. The quickest ways are to share each recipe’s original web page to Plate & Page, or to paste its text. Photos from your library also work, for recipes that started on paper. Each one opens as a draft you review before saving.
In practice, most people cook from a few dozen recipes they come back to. Starting with those, rather than a whole archive, gets a working cookbook quickly. The guide on how to save recipes from any website covers each method step by step.
