Grams of butter to tablespoons
Recipes from outside the US often give butter in grams. To measure it with US sticks, use the tablespoon marks on the wrapper.
| Grams | Tablespoons | Sticks |
|---|---|---|
| 50 g | about 3 1/2 tbsp | under 1 stick |
| 100 g | about 7 tbsp | under 1 stick |
| 125 g | about 9 tbsp | 1 stick + 1 tbsp |
| 200 g | about 14 tbsp | 1 stick + 6 tbsp |
| 250 g | about 17 1/2 tbsp | 2 sticks + 1 1/2 tbsp |
Measuring butter
- Sticks. A US stick is 1/4 pound. Cut along the tablespoon marks on the wrapper for smaller amounts.
- Salted or unsalted. USDA lists the same weights for both, so the chart works for either.
- By the cup. If you only have a tub, press softened butter into a dry measuring cup so there are no air gaps, then level it. A scale is easier.
Oil, milk and the other liquids are on the full cups to grams chart.
Convert butter in Plate & Page
Plate & Page’s scaling and conversion guide explains that with Convert Between Volume and Weight turned on, which it is by default, and Metric chosen in Settings, “ingredients with a known density are shown by weight”, using “a bundled reference table of about 450 ingredients”. Ingredients it has no density for are converted only within the same kind of unit, such as cups to millilitres, and never guessed.
Scaling and unit conversion are part of the free edition. The app uses its own reference table, so its figures can differ slightly from the charts on this page.
